The
Texas
Bluebonnet Award was established
in 1979 to encourage Texas children in grades 3
- 6 to:
books
- Explore a
variety of current books
- Develop
powers of discrimination
- Identify
their favorite books
The Texas
Bluebonnet Award Committee receives suggestions
from librarians, teachers, parents, and
students. To be considered, all titles must be
recommended by at least one review source, and
have been published within the past two years.
The committee makes the final selections to
meet a variety of
interest and reading levels
so that most students will be able to find at
least five books they can and want to read.
The
Carroll ES Library has 2-3 copies
of each title. The
Southlake Public Library
in Town Square has twelve
copies of each title. (NOTE: Southlake residents
and Carroll ISD students are eligible for a FREE
library card from the
Southlake Public Library.
Students may
have only one Bluebonnet book checked out at a
time from the CES Library. At the
Southlake Public Library, patrons are allowed to have up
to two Bluebonnet books checked-out on each
patron card.
Carroll students in grades 3
& 4 are encouraged to read or hear read at least
five
books
from the current year's nominations. Students
choose the books
they want to read.
The twenty titles on the list ARE NOT intended
to be required reading for ALL students.
Students must
read or hear read a minimum of five
books
because this is the minimum requirement for a
student to be eligible to participate in the
statewide Bluebonnet voting for their favorite
title.
Since the
Bluebonnet Award voting will take place the 3rd
week in January, students need to have read or
heard read at least five books before then.
Students who want to read more than five books
are encouraged to do so, and will receive
additional awards and recognition.
- 5 books
- eligible to
vote in January for favorite book and certificate
of
recognition;
- 10 books
or more
- small prizes
and certificate of
recognition;
- 20 books
- Texas Bluebonnet t-shirt;
- 20 books
in 3rd and 4th grade
- a decorative
Bluebonnet Award lapel pin from the Texas
Library Association
To be
eligible to vote, a student must read at least
five titles from the
current year's
nominees.
However, a student wanting to read or hear read
more than five titles may substitute a
Bluebonnet book of similar length from a
previous year she has not already read when the
content of a title from the current year's list
is not age-appropriate for the reader.
The Bluebonnet Program does not require, nor
advocate, that youngsters take tests on the
books, answer formal questions, or write reports
as a way of showing they have read
particular titles.
It is
sufficient for the purposes of this program for
students to acknowledge they have read a book or
heard a book read aloud by
checking off the title on their
Master Checklist.
At Carroll
ES, ONLY
students reading or having heard read 10 or more books
need to turn in the Reading Record. Students reading less than 10 books, DO NOT need
to turn in the Reading Record.
Students can get a copy in
the library or print a copy here:
Texas Bluebonnet
Reading Record
Carroll ES students need to return the form to the Carroll ES Library
by March 31st.
